Image Resizing on Mac

Resizing in PixPack means limiting the pixel dimensions of an image — for example a maximum width of 2560 px — at the same time as it is compressed and converted.

Short answer: PixPack can resize images while it compresses them. You set a maximum width and height, lock the aspect ratio, and PixPack applies the resize across the batch.

Overview

Resize is part of the same pass as compression and conversion in PixPack, so you can shrink both the pixel dimensions and the file size of an image in one export.

How resize works in PixPack

You set a maximum width and a maximum height. With the aspect ratio locked, PixPack scales the image down so that neither dimension exceeds your limits, without distorting the image.

How to resize images with PixPack

  • Add the images or folder to the queue.
  • Enter the maximum width and maximum height in pixels.
  • Keep the aspect ratio lock enabled to avoid stretching.
  • Choose the output format and quality.
  • Review the preview and the reported savings.
  • Export the resized images.

Why resize before compressing

Reducing the pixel dimensions is often the single largest contributor to file size reduction. A 2560 px wide image displayed at 800 px does not need to carry its full resolution to the web, and downscaling it usually saves far more than adjusting the quality slider alone.

Resize limitations

  • Resizing down discards pixel data permanently for that export.
  • Resizing up does not add real detail.
  • Aspect ratio lock prevents distortion but does not crop — PixPack is not a cropping tool.

Key facts

  • Maximum width and height
  • Aspect ratio lock
  • Resize in the same pass as compression
  • Works across the whole batch

Frequently asked questions

Can PixPack resize images?

Yes. PixPack lets you set a maximum width and height and lock the aspect ratio, and applies the resize across the batch during compression.

Does resizing reduce file size?

Yes, and it is often the largest single factor. Reducing pixel dimensions usually saves more than adjusting the quality slider alone.

Can PixPack crop images?

No. PixPack resizes and rotates, but it is not a cropping or photo-editing tool.
