Supported Formats

The seven image formats PixPack reads, the five it writes, and the metadata types it can preserve or remove.

Short answer: PixPack reads JPEG, PNG, HEIC, WebP, GIF, BMP and TIFF files, and writes JPEG, PNG, HEIC, WebP and GIF.

Input formats (read)

JPEG Lossy photographic format. Most compatible output.
PNG Lossless, supports transparency.
HEIC Apple photo format. Compact storage.
WebP Modern web format, lossy and lossless.
GIF Palette-limited, supports animation.
BMP Read only. Uncompressed bitmap.
TIFF Read only. Common in print and scanning workflows.

Output formats (write)

JPEG Maximum compatibility for photos and email.
PNG Lossless output that keeps transparency.
HEIC Compact output for Apple ecosystems.
WebP Smallest files for modern web delivery.
GIF Added in version 1.4.3.

Metadata

EXIF Camera model, exposure settings, timestamps and other capture data. Can be kept or removed.
GPS Geographic coordinates recorded with the photo. Can be stripped before sharing.
ICC profile The colour profile used to interpret the image colours. Handled by PixPack according to the App Store description.

Choosing a format

  • For websites: WebP first, JPEG as a fallback, PNG or WebP when transparency is needed.
  • For email: JPEG, because every mail client accepts it.
  • For Apple devices: HEIC, which is the native photo format.
  • For maximum compatibility: JPEG or PNG.
  • For archival masters: keep the original file and export a compressed derivative.

Yes. BMP and TIFF are readable input formats, so they can be exported to any of the five output formats, including WebP.

What metadata can PixPack keep or remove?

PixPack handles EXIF, GPS, ICC profile data. You can keep EXIF and camera data, or strip GPS location before sharing.

Is HEIC suitable for website images?

No. Browser support for HEIC is limited. Use WebP, JPEG or PNG for web assets.
