Image Metadata Control on Mac

Metadata control in PixPack is deciding which embedded information — EXIF camera data, GPS coordinates and ICC colour profiles — travels with the exported image.

Short answer: PixPack can keep or remove image metadata. You can preserve EXIF and camera data, or strip GPS location information before you share a photo.

Overview

Photos carry more than pixels. EXIF blocks record camera settings, timestamps and often the exact location where a photo was taken. PixPack lets you decide what to keep.

Metadata types PixPack handles

  • EXIF — camera model, exposure settings, timestamps and other capture data
  • GPS — the geographic coordinates recorded with the photo
  • ICC profile — the colour profile used to interpret the image colours

Keeping metadata

Keep EXIF Data preserves the camera information in the export. This matters for photographers who rely on capture data, and for archives where provenance should stay attached to the file.

The 1.4.3 release notes state that WebP exports now preserve EXIF metadata when "keep metadata" is enabled.

Stripping metadata

Strip GPS Info removes location data from the exported image. This is the setting to use before posting a photo publicly or sending it to someone who should not receive your location.

Metadata and file size

Metadata occupies space in the file. Removing it makes the file marginally smaller, but the effect is usually small compared with the quality and resize settings.
